Bible Based, Family Oriented

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, organized in 1816 holds the distinction of being the oldest established church of African descent in the Pennington/Hopewell region. Since 1847 Bethel has remained at its current location at 246 S. Main Street. Over the years Bethel has served as a place of worship, a place of convening, and an arena for the education of countless families. Since our humble beginning, Bethel has remained a significant part of the culture not only for African Americans but also for the general population of all local residents.

Sensitive and proud of our unique heritage, Bethel continues to remain the spiritual home for several descendants of the original founding members. Bethel owns several historical artifacts including the original offering plates used as far back as the mid 1800's. It is proud to remain a bible based and family centered congregation. Although Bethel is a church steeped in an appreciation for its longevity, it also remains responsive to the needs of the present age. We further pride ourselves on being a warm and friendly congregation. As our membership transitions under the leadership of our current Pastor, the Rev. Gregory S. Smith, the membership remains committed to "reach the lost" and provide a "beacon of hope" for people of all walks of life.

We offer worship service and Sunday School each week on Sunday morning. We are now offering "Children's Church" on Sunday morning to provide our youth with an interactive and relevant worship experience while the adults enjoy our regular worship experience. Wednesday evening is Bible study and every third Friday we host movie and game night! Please email the Church for the correct current times.
